Is a bed in a dog crate necessary?

When you buy a dog crate can you use a bunch of blankets for them to lie on or do you need a bed from the store?

From Craigslist? Garage sale?
I need a crate for a 90 lbs. dog.
The pet store has one for 70$ and Im trying to beat that price!
Thanks!

It’s a long explanation, but I need to know how to cut the wires on a dog crate in a rectangle :)
thanks

How long is too long to leave a dog in a crate?

Whenever I come home the house is trashed, so I think I need to crate train. No one is home from 8am to 4pm. Is that too excessive for a one year old lab mix?

So I’m adopting a new dog that has to be on cage rest for the first 6-8 weeks because of knee surgery. I’ve had a dog in the past but can’t for the life of me remember if when they are in the cage during the day when I’m not there if I’m supposed to leave water or not – if I do won’t they need to relieve themselves while I’m away?

Thanks!
I should also clarify that water will be available the rest of the day at all times – this is just while I’m at work.

Soft Dog Crate that Exceeds 33in in Height?

Hi, I have an English Mastiff and his current crate which is 33in is starting to be too small for him. His head rubs and his back rubs. Id prefer the cloth instead of wire because its lighter for me to carry and more portable. Can anyone help me find a portable/soft crate that is around 33-54in in height?

OK, so I got my dog and have left his crate open for him to go in and out of in the pantry while I’m at work. All was fine for the first few weeks and now even after we have gone out for his "business" he has peed once and the other time pooped when I was only gone for a short time. I hate to crate him but now feel I need too. Thoughts?

Can someone tell me the pros and cons of crate training a dog and could you please give some details?

I just switched crates to a bigger one today, and I’m wondering how this will effect my dog, as in lots of whining, barking, peeing in the crate, etc. I need some advice on anything about switching to bigger crates.

What crate should I get for my Husky?

What size crate should be appropriate for my adult husky?

First Crate – http://www.dog.com/item/petmate-deluxe-vari-kennel-jr-plastic-crate/380107/
Second Crate – http://www.dog.com/item/precision-pet-cargo-kennel/496775/
Third Crate – http://www.dog.com/item/duracrate-folding-dog-crate/495571/
They each have different sizes, saying "the first one" doesn’t help ._.

The mystery is still a mystery… Mutt mixture.?

Alright, my dog is still very much a mystery. Every time we board her, the faculty have a fun time trying to figure out her mixture. The vet couldn’t tell either, so we gave her a DNA test. It came up inconclusive so the vet didn’t charge us and just laughed. A little about her: We adopted her from PawPrints animal rescue in Chandler, NC the day after she was rescued from a puppy mill puppy store. She was thrown in a crate to the side of the store and covered with a towel so no one could see her. She was left with no food or water and had to live in her own filth all because she wasn’t "pure." She was 10 weeks old. Now she is 18 months and a great dog. She is about 21" at the whithers and 24" from her whithers to the base of her tail. She loves to run and never seems to get tired. She is very tall and lean with a deep chest and long legs. Her face looks just like a beagle, but her ears just don’t seem to fit her head. They are either droopy or folded in half, or on occasion she just likes to have her ears flopped back onto her head lol. We were told she is part beagle which wouldn’t surprise me because of her hunting abilities, looks and howl, but some other mixed suggestions have been: Rhodesian ridgeback, boxer, greyhound, coon hound, jack russel, brittany, and english setter just to name a few.

Below are some pictures and a video of her. I’m just doing this for fun to see what others think she is. There is no right or wrong answer, clearly, she is a mutt. lol Enjoy. Her name is Nola-Belle by the way.

Dog doesn't need a crate- why is he so good?

I adopted my dog from my uncle when he was 9 years old. He came to me with a crate, and my uncle told me that he would go in the crate when nobody was home. Except I noticed that he would cry and bark when he was in the crate. One time I tried leaving the house for a short trip without putting him in the crate, and when I came back, he was happy instead of barking and upset like he normally was. I tried it a few more times, and eventually left for work without putting the dog in the crate. The only problem I’ve ever had was that if the bathroom door is closed, the dog will sometimes go through that garbage. But as long as I remember to close the bathroom door- there’s no problem and my dog is happier than he was in the crate.

My dog prefers to lay on the couch instead of the dog bed or a crate, so finally i just got folded up the crate, and got rid of the dog bed, and now I keep a sheet on the couch which I wash once a week. The dog and I are much happier in this situation.

I don’t know if my uncle did some special training to prevent my dog from chewing things, or if I’m just lucky. But I don’t see the need to leave my dog in a crate if he doesn’t need to be there and doesn’t like it.

He’s my first dog- so I’ve never had to actually train a dog from puppy age. I understand that crates are helpful for teaching puppies not to pee or poo in the house, or for dogs that destroy things when they’re alone- but other than that, I don’t see the need to crate a dog. Is it unusual that my dog is so well behaved?

Things to do when your dog has kennel cough?

Two of my dogs have kennel cough (female Shepherd/lab, male min pin) and we took them to the vet, got them medication, and all that good stuff. But, obviously they are still gonna feel miserable until the medicine starts to really kick in. Like, when humans are sick they wanna be taken care of, and relax, have there neck/back rubbed, etc.. What do you do for dogs? Basically the same thing? Just to make this a little bit easier to deal with. And this is the female’s first time ever getting sick.

I am just curious if the State of Texas regulates dog / cat boarding facilities through mandatory licensing. I’m not concerned with breeding, only temporary boarding kennels.

I’m trying to crate my puppy of 11 weeks, but here’s the thing. I attached the play pen (http://www.abcpetplaza.net/Index.asp?KB=SHOSAI&SID=500013) to the crate (thttp://www.pottytrainingapuppy.org/folding-dog-cage.html) to potty train her. But just on the first night of usage, she had a mistake and soiled her rug that was in the play pen area as well as the following night. So on the 3rd morning, i took the rug out leaving just her bedding and her chew toys.

So when she’s confined, she’s able to pee and poo in the crate which is the right place but whenever i let her out for awhile to clean up the litter tray, she will be peeing around the house. I’m not sure if I’m doing it wrongly. Should I just confine her totally until she’s housebroken?

How do I tell if she’s ready to housebreak? I’m so worried now and I can’t help but confine her inside all day until I’m able to get to town to buy her diapers.

By the way, ever since I started to confine her, she’s been behaving real bad. she used to listen to me but not anymore.. ):
For the first week i had her, she’s at 10 weeks old and I let her roamed around the house and in my bedroom. But she peed and poop everywhere and I would bring her to the papers if I was quick enough.I will love to do that but I can’t be there 24/7 as I’m working full time. So I’ve just started to potty train her by letting her get use to the smell of papers and it does work but just at the expense of her freedom she used to had.

I do not have to bring her outside of the house to pee, for one, she is in the play pen area with the litter tray there beneath the crate. and the door is left open so she can do her business whenever she needs to. Two, I’m living in a high-rise apartment in Singapore, I can’t bring her outside(walkway) to pee because that’s very inconsiderate.

The only problem is why is she peeing the moment i let her out of the playpen and how will I know if she’s housebroken so I can safely let her out without worrying she will make mista

What do I need to own a dog kennel?

I have worked at a dog kennel in the past and now I am very interested in starting my own Dog kennel business. I was wondering in where to start? What education do I need? Etc… Any suggestions?

How do I build a dog kennel?

A little over a year ago I had a dog that was stolen out of my yard. Now in the near future I will be getting a new puppy and I want to build a kennel that the most skilled intruder couldn’t get through. If you could give me some advice on how to make that happen that would be great. Thank You.

I do not want to keep the dog in the crate or chained while I am at work from 8 -5. So I am buying an outdoor kennel (dog staying indoor is not a option for me) for the dog to stay until I come back from work. Can some please tell me what should be the LXWXH of the outdoor kennel.

what can I use for dog-crate chewing dog?

My 80 lb. dog chews her crate – the plastic tray and all of the blankets I put in there. I have replaced the tray several times, but she still destroys it. What can I use for a tray, and is there any comfortable bedding which is hard to destroy?
Thank you so much for all of the answers I have received. Now I have some great ideas.
She is in a crate only when we go out.
